Integrated Pest Management:
Although the law regarding pest control is improving, often the problem we frequently encounter today is down to poor practice and the laws we do have not being followed. This can cause a major impact on the environment and non-target and often protected animals being harmed or killed.
Often rodenticides are laid inappropriately and unused rodenticide bait not recovered at the end of the treatment. This leads to non-target animals being poisoned and often secondary poisoning of other animals that may be natural predators of the pest species. Insecticides may be used, then the treated area not being sealed to prevent non-target and protected species being affected. Sometimes the insecticide used to treat an insect infestation can be quite powerful and the compounds may remain for years. If good practice and adequate precautions are not taken with treatment the compounds may soon be carried to bee hives, enter water courses etc.
The law does state when treating any problem that “the least toxic effective method” must always be used. This is often not the case as frequently it is easier and faster to scatter copious amounts of toxic bait. Often this may not be the legal action for the reasons given previously and frequently means the problem will take longer to solve.
Hawk Environmental Solutions has many techniques available to ensure the fastest but also the most ecologically sound, legal method is used.
It can be common for the pest treatment to be carried out without the cause being identified and rectified. If for instance you have a problem with rats at a location, removing the rats will only be a temporary fix, as others will eventually follow. The cause of the problem needs to be identified and the measures taken to help prevent reinfestation.
To provide the most comprehensive service we use our knowledge of the pests, their life cycle and what they are attracted to to help ensure a fully integrated pest management plan is utilised.
